Amos grew up in West Virginia and moved to Florida after graduating from college in 2017, spending a few months in Edgewater before settling in North Beach, one of the quieter sections of Miami Beach. After several years there, three compounding issues pushed her back across the causeway: coastal sinking, seasonal overcrowding and, finally, the daily stress of finding somewhere to leave a car.

The land-sinking concern sits at the centre of her account. Amos writes that she weighed it carefully when she was ready to buy property, describing the oceanfront location as more of a liability than an asset. She wanted somewhere she could envisage living for decades, which meant moving to higher inland ground.

Research published since her move reinforces that caution. University of Miami News reported on 13 December 2024 that scientists at the University of Miami Rosenstiel School had identified 35 buildings along the Miami Beach to Sunny Isles Beach coastline as experiencing subsidence, ground settling faster than previously expected. The study appeared in the American Geophysical Union’s journal Earth and Space Science. Among the structures identified as affected are the Porsche Design Tower, the Ritz-Carlton Residences and Trump Tower III, according to reporting on the findings.

The broader picture is one Amos alluded to in general terms: many coastal cities across the United States are slowly sinking, and Miami Beach sits on a barrier island with limited elevation. Her decision to purchase a house farther inland, where land sits at its highest point in Miami-Dade County, reflects exactly the logic that coastal-risk analysts apply when mapping long-term property exposure.

Spring break, parking and the everyday calculus of island living

Beyond the geology, two more practical grievances shaped her thinking. Miami Beach’s reputation as a spring-break destination brought what Amos describes as crowds and occasional chaos to popular spots each year, with the city’s free trolley service overwhelmed by visitors and the beach itself becoming effectively inaccessible to residents. Traffic to South Beach during the season was, in her words, terrible to navigate.

Parking compounded everything once she bought a car for a new teaching commute. Her building in North Beach had no parking garage, so each evening meant circling blocks for up to half an hour in search of a free space. On one occasion, a vehicle had parked so tightly in front of her that she could barely leave for work. Rather than risk losing a hard-won spot, she would sometimes leave her car unmoved all weekend.

The situation has since shifted. In 2024, Miami Beach formally ended its association with spring break, implementing DUI checkpoints and curfews to address the seasonal disorder. North Beach has also introduced resident-only parking zones that should ease the competition Amos faced. Miami-Dade County has ongoing projects addressing coastal storms and rising sea levels.

Amos says she remains happy with the move and now visits Miami Beach only for special occasions, with spring break firmly off the itinerary. The subsidence study, scheduled for peer review and now in print, means the question she was asking in 2021 (how stable is this ground over a decades-long horizon) is one that researchers and, increasingly, property buyers along the barrier islands are asking too.
