Justus Kelley Miss USA 2026 is now official: the Virginia titleholder was crowned winner of the 75th Miss USA pageant on Thursday at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts in Miami, becoming the first mother, first married woman, and first woman in her 30s to win the title in the competition’s history.

Kelley, 31, was crowned by Miss USA 2025 Audrey Eckert at the conclusion of a competition that drew 51 women from across the United States. She will go on to represent the country at the Miss Universe pageant in Puerto Rico in November.

Justus Kelley Miss USA 2026: A First on Multiple Fronts

The rules that made Kelley’s entry possible are relatively recent. The pageant only began permitting married women and mothers to compete in 2023. The year 2024 marked the first time all women aged 18 and over were eligible, after the previous upper age limit of 28 was removed. Kelley arrived at this year’s competition as a foster mum of two, a nonprofit founder, and a children’s book author, and she made full use of the final-question stage to articulate what her win would mean.

Asked what her year as Miss USA would say about women in America today, Kelley answered plainly: ‘What my year as Miss USA would mean and look like is no longer questioning if we have to choose between our ambitious careers, our families, and our wildest dreams. I’m standing on this stage embracing every part of who I am, and I believe that I can be your next Miss USA.’

At a press conference after the pageant, she described her position as a responsibility. ‘I look at this like a responsibility to know that I was trusted to be the first,’ she said, adding that she ‘won’t be the last.’

Virginia has not produced a Miss USA winner for more than five decades. According to Wikipedia, Kelley is only the third woman from Virginia to hold the title, following Wendy Dascomb in 1969 and Deborah Shelton in 1970. The long gap between state winners gives her win an additional layer of local history beyond the national firsts she has already claimed.

The prize package attached to the crown is considerable. Hola reports that the package is valued at more than $685,000, comprising a $150,000 salary, a Range Rover, luxury accommodations in Miami, and wardrobe benefits for the Miss Universe competition.

A Thrifted Wardrobe and a New ‘Commercial Appeal’ Category

Kelley brought a personal philosophy to the competition’s dress requirements. She told reporters she had competed throughout the weekend in an entirely thrifted wardrobe. ‘I loved one of my first USA state pageants, walking in with a really special suit that I found in Goodwill,’ she said. ‘As soon as I walked in, the judges said, “Oh, you look stunning,” and I said, “Thank you, $9.99 at Goodwill.”‘ Her point, she explained, was that contestants ‘don’t have to spend a million dollars’ to present well on the pageant stage.

The timing of that message carried some weight, given that this year’s competition introduced a brand-new judging category called ‘commercial appeal.’ Host Ian Ziering described the criterion during the live broadcast: ‘Miss USA shouldn’t only look incredible wearing that crown, they should make the rest of the world want to work with the woman wearing it.’ Co-host Kenya Moore, who held the Miss USA title in 1993, added that the pageant was ‘putting emphasis’ on the winner’s ‘ability to connect with a camera, with major brands, with beauty campaigns, and more.’ The category was assessed using a portfolio of non-pageant images submitted to judges who attended all rounds, including preliminary rounds.

Audience participation also played a part in the finals for the first time, with fans given a 12-minute window to vote on which contestants advanced to the top 10. Their votes were combined with judges’ scores, though the relative weighting was not disclosed. Miss Montana led the public vote at the close of the window but did not advance to the top 10.

The broadcast arrangements around this year’s final were themselves a story. The CW Network had been scheduled to air both the Miss USA and Miss Teen USA finals but withdrew from those plans. The network stated it had made the decision ‘after careful consideration and conversations with the Miss USA Organization.’ The Miss USA organisation, for its part, cited ‘a contractual issue with our production arrangements that could not be resolved within the necessary timeframe.’ Both finals were ultimately broadcast live on the Queen Beauty Network, as they were in 2025.

Kelley will carry the title into the Miss Universe pageant in Puerto Rico in November, where the newly added commercial-appeal criterion and her now well-documented thrifting ethos will travel with her as defining features of this year’s crown.
